Earlier this year, I introduced legislation that would allow school districts to begin classes before Labor Day.

Senate Bill 271 would eliminate the current restriction that prohibits districts from starting before Labor Day and allow schools would be allowed to open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in August. My legislation also maintains the section of the law that prohibits classes from being held on Monday or Friday in August. This section was retained to ensure families are still able to enjoy the benefits of a four-day weekend.

Friday morning I was pleased to join Bill Ballenger of the Ballenger Report to discuss the bill’s content and where it is in the legislative process.
